The Supreme Court has ordered the 4th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals to re-examine its 2011 decision that blocked a suit by Liberty University, a pretend-college that gets federal money to indoctrinate students with right-wing Christian propaganda, and is used to launder money by Jerry Falwell’s evangelical empire. The case of Liberty University v. Geithner (11-438) was blocked by the appeals court on jurisdictional grounds after the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Healthcare Act, also known as Obamacare, because the Supreme Court decision invalidated all pending suits against the act.
Liberty University had claimed that Obamacare would lead to taxpayer dollars funding abortions and contraception – which is not illegal under current law – and claimed the law’s provisions violated so-called “religious freedom”, a concept that has no legal standing. The only mention of religion in the Constitution insures that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion”, which has been interpreted to mean there can be no state-sponsored religion, and which is part of the foundation for the separation of church and state.
Liberty University refiled its suit after the Supreme Court decision that validated Obamacare. The mandate to the appeals court is seen as a first step to hearing the case in the Supreme Court.
Residents of storm-battered Long Island, many of whom have been without electrical power for weeks, received bills from the Long Island Power Authority charging the full monthly rate.
“I can’t get LIPA to acknowledge my existence on earth to talk to me about anything, but I guess they had power, so they could print my bills. Nice, right?” grumbled one resident.
Senator Saxby Chambliss (R – Georgia) is the latest high-ranking Republican in Congress to indicate a willingness to compromise with President Barack Obama and allow tax cuts for the rich to lapse.
Chambliss told a Georgia television station he no longer feels bound by his pledge to anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist, saying “I care more about my country than I do about a 20-year-old pledge.” The two-term Senator then added “It’s kind of like one of Newt Gingrich’s marriages: you stick with it until something better comes along.”
Chambliss admitted he is risking Norquist’s opposition when he runs for re-election. “But I don’t worry about that because I care too much about my country. I care a lot more about it than I do Grover Norquist,” he said, adding “we had a good thing for a while, but we’ve grown apart. Also Obama won the election and that’s a real warning sign for anyone who is coming-up for re-election to get our thumbs out of our asses and do something or the American people are going to show us the door – and on the other side of that door there are no lobbyists, perks, or secret bank accounts stuffed full of bribe money. So Grover can stuff it.”
Police in the United Arab Emirates arrested an Indian national in a females-only park, saying the man was dressed as a woman. The man was charged with violating “principles of public decency and societal customs and authentic Arab Islamic traditions,” although he got a few points for not having shaved his mustache as part of his disguise. However those points were taken back when it was discovered he had shaved elsewhere.
Mitt Romney, in calls to major donors to his presidential campaign, said President Barack Obama bought the election by giving “gifts” to his core constituency: that 47% of loafers and freeloaders who live below the income level that is taxable: African-Americans, Hispanics, and young and elderly voters.
Romney first proposed that Obama is supported by a core constituency of people who want free stuff from the government in early 2012 at an appearance before wealthy donors during the campaign. That appearance was secretly recorded and made a campaign football by the media. Romney recanted and said he was wrong, that his comments were crudely delivered, and at one point intimated that during a campaign it is standard practice to play to the prejudices of the audience.
But it appears Romney has returned to his theme of government-dependent freeloaders blindly supporting Obama to get government handouts as he attempts to rationalize his election loss to those who supported him, and ultimately to himself. He doesn’t see his failure as a result of his unpopular policies, his elitism, or his inability to understand the lives of average Americans. Instead it’s the fault of those poor people, the freeloaders who are looting our government of the hard-earned taxes the rich pay.
Not all Republicans failed to learn anything from the recent election, though. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal criticized Romney’s remarks, saying “I don’t think that represents where we are as a party and where we’re going as a party. That has got to be one of the most fundamental takeaways from this election.”
This WordPress incarnation of GraceLessLand published its 1,000th post yesterday. And it seems like only about ten months ago it was 500.
I think the pace is going to slow here – perhaps to one post per day instead of two, or even three a week. There are many other things to be done other than making fun of other things….
Fox News is reporting that Attorney General Eric Holder has known since late summer of the affair between CIA Director Gen. David Petraeus and writer Paula Broadwell. Many find it unbelievable that President Barack Obama only learned of the situation last Thursday in light of the revelations of Holder’s knowledge of the revelations of Petraeus’ affair.
“The timing between the President’s reelection and the start of the hearings into the CIA role in the Benghazi, Libya attacks is totally coincidental” a White House source said, adding “and even if it wasn’t what is anyone going to do about it now? The election is over! Nya nya nya nya nya!”
Petraeus met Broadwell, who is is appropriately named, when the much younger woman approached him as the subject of her graduate dissertation. Once Petraeus was put in command of U.S. forces in Afghanistan Broadwell traveled there and was, ahem, embedded with the general’s staff.
I know, I know: you lost another election. You’re faced with four more years of a black man residing in the White House and you’re feeling hurt and confused – after all, why is it called the “White” House if blacks can live there? You did your best spending billions of dollars on campaigns that you weren’t willing to spend on taxes, to make sure you don’t have to pay more taxes. Not being good with math you still aren’t sure how that works-out. And that contributes to your feelings of insecurity.
But cheer up! You may never win the presidency again, but you do still control the House of Representatives, and that means you get to continue to do what you do best: obstruct legislation, take symbolic votes on bills you know will never make it through the Senate, and stuff things up women’s vaginas when they get pregnant. You can continue to say you speak for all Americans even though you are predominantly old white men with prostate problems. And you can see to it that the Democrats make absolutely no progress with the economy because good economic news is bad news for Republicans.
You’ve still got your fantasy world of white supremacy, male domination, and Protestant Christian values to live in! Don’t let reality intrude now when you’ve managed to delude yourselves that you are still relevant 112 years after the 19th century ended! All you have to do is keep saying “we just have to be more conservative and people will love us!” until it seems the same as the truth.
Come on, you can do it. Jam that stick of moral superiority up your backside and march in lock-step into a future that looks just like a black-and-white musical from the 1930s, where white men rule the world and black men serve them drinks! A world where there are still a few new ways to creatively work rape into a positive context! That’s your world – even if it is just make-believe!
Once the shock of President Barack Obama’s reelection wore-off at Fox News the grief set in. Pundit Bill O’Reilly blamed minorities, as did Dick “Dick” Morris, saying the “traditional America” is dead. Others at the unfair and bullshit news network blamed the rest of the media, especially for their coverage of hurricane Sandy because everyone knows any hurricane that makes landfall in the northeast instead of the south must be a liberal.
The Greek Parliament voted to implement austerity spending cuts in an attempt to stem the country’s spiral into economic disaster. As the government voted on the measure thousands of unhappy Greeks rioted in the streets of Athens, mainly just to have something to do since unemployment there is running at around 99%.
Barack Obama has been elected to a second term as President of the United States of America, narrowly defeating Republican opponent Mitt Romney.
Six billion dollars so things can stay exactly the same. I’m glad I voted for the Green candidate even if she did get about 0.05% of the popular vote. That was a real vote for CHANGE!
Still, it’s better to stick with the idiot we had than to have elected that plastic window dummy the Republicans ran – the one with every possible opinion on every issue. The last thing America needs is a “businessman” running things – they’re the jerks who got us into this mess to begin with.
Most amusing is the thought that right now, somewhere, Newt Gingrich is blind drunk and butt naked and crying “See! I would have won! Me! I’m the President! I’m the President!” as Callista prepares a syringe full of propofol to calm him down.
Of course, had Romney won we at GraceLessLand were prepared:
Speaking at one of his final campaign events in West Allis, Wisconsin, GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney warned that unless he is elected the Republicans in congress will work to wreck the economy. Like they haven’t already.
